IWSG: September

It's the first Wednesday of the month, and that means Insecure Writers Support Group day. :) A day for writers all over the blogsphere to share their insecurities and help encourage each other.

Big thanks go out to Alex J. Cavanaugh, our fearless leader and IWSG founder, and to his wonderful cohosts, Heather M. GardnerChristine RainsDolorah at Book LoverJulie Flanders, and Murees DupĂ©.

As I sit here and think about writing this post, I'm not sure what to say. What am I insecure about? A better question right now may be what am I not feeling insecure about? This summer has not been a good one where writing is concerned. I've been so busy with other things, writing has taken a backseat. But with school starting I'm excited to get some more down time and hopefully get a lot more writing done.

Hopefully.

I'm also on submission right now, which is hard. There's a lot of waiting, with occasional nos thrown in, then more waiting. Needless to say it is anxiety-inducing.

And now I need to change the title of my ms that's on submission because a popular author just released a book with a very, very similar title. And while I know that titles often change once in the hands of a publisher anyway, it still feels stressful now. I still feel like I need to come up with something else to call it while on sub, because we all know the current title will need to be changed at some point. And I hate titles.

Boo.

Okay, whining over. On the up side, I have finished another round of revisions on said ms and I think it really is in the best place now. On the up side, I am on submission. Which means I found an agent who loved my story and I'm thankful for that.

It's easy to get down about things at any step along this road, because each step can be hard. But it's good to stop sometimes and remember all the hard steps we've already made.

Have a great September everyone! I hope you had a wonderful summer! :) :)

  1. Titles are hard! I would hate to have to change mine since it took me forever to come up with it in the first place.
Hopefully you can get lots of writing done soon!

  2. I'm not very good with titles either. Coming up with a good one is tougher than writing the book.
    Good luck with submissions!

  3. Wishing you luck with the submission. Hopefully you don't have to change the title too much.

  4. Congrats on getting an agent and being on submission. That's a huge step. Hopefully you won't have to wait too long. Good luck on finding a new working title. Don't stress too much since it will probably change again anyway.

  5. Awh, I'm sorry, that stinks. At least you don't have to change something SUPER major...like the whole plot ;) But I feel your pain! Titles have been kicking my butt recently. This wasn't a super productive writing summer for me, either, but I'm finally getting back in the groove of things. Have a wonderful September!

  6. I say leave the title. They understand. No reason to rush to change it--unless they want to buy it. =)

  7. Summers slow me down too. Waiting is so hard. You want to just spend the whole day hitting refresh on the email rather than working. I have a hard time with titles too. Hopefully it will be bought for a ton of money and they'll offer a title suggestion to go along with the cash.

  10. Congrats on finding the agent. That is high on the up side. Good job. Waiting is always hard in anything--lol, in todays microwave society we are use to things happening fast. Best of luck to you,

  11. Congratulations on the agent! That's a big deal! And I'm sorry that you have to change your title, especially since it can be tough to come up with a good one. One writing teacher told me that when it comes to creating a title, you could use an object or a phrase that is significant in the story; that way you could just look around in the pages you've already written for possible titles.

  13. Yay for the agent and te submissioninging (that might not be the correct technical term, but I expect you know what I mean) Waiting makes it hard to concentrate though. I'm not sure why it does, but it definitely does.

  14. Congrats on being on submission! I can only imagine how hard that must be. Maybe like having one foot allmoost in the door, and you're wobbling on the other, hoping you can eventually just hop on through? I hope this fall will bring good writing things your way!

  15. Oh, gosh, titles are such toughies, for sure. Sorry a popular author released something with a title similar to your own! This has happened to me before, and it still grates me a decade later, LOL. (In 2003, I wrote a vampire novel that had "twilight" as part of the title. Guess who stole that a couple years later! XD)

Anyway, best of luck writing, and with your submission, too! I can just imagine how nerve-wracking all that must be...

  16. Titles are a thing I don't like. They drive me nuts because a good title can sway me in a bookstore. Good luck figuring out what to call it. And it's awesome to have an agent by your side when you go into submission because submission can be a very lonely place. I'm sure it will all work out.

  17. My best titles come along in dreams. Maybe trust your dreams? Congrats on 'being on submission' though the waiting game is a tough one. I've read now's the time to start that next story OR a connected novella. All the best!
