Level Up! Blogfest

Level Up BlogfestBig thanks to Allison and Jamie, who are hosting the Level Up! Blogfest today! They said, "Games are an important part of living; otherwise life would be boring as hell." So they're having a blogfest all about games. How fun is that?

One of my favorite games at family functions was Taboo. My sisters and I would play against our cousins and we would always win. :) For those who aren't familiar with the game, basically you need to get the other person to guess what is on your card, but there is also a list of words you aren't allowed to say. So, for example, if you had Minnie Mouse you probably wouldn't be able to use the words cartoon, Disney, Mickey, etc.
The reason my sisters and I always won is because we were close enough, and had enough shared stories, that we could easily get the other person to figure it out using some stream of 'hey, remember that time.'

Another favorite game was played at our barn Christmas parties. I show Arabians and when I was younger there was always a big Christmas party at the barn, with the horses. :) One game we played was bobbing for apples, or carrots, but it was the horses who'd bob.
Apples float, but carrots sink. My horse, Beatle, being a bit of a pig and rather clever, figured out that if he just blew water out his nose he could dive for the carrots and get them very quickly! He was the bobbing for carrots Champion every year!

How about you? What are your favorite games?

Oh, and check out this great interview at USA today with my fellow Swoon Romance author, Stephanie Wardrop where she compares Elizabeth Bennet and Liz Lemon. :)

  1. This bloghop is showing me how many games there are that I've never played before lol! Taboo is one of them!

  2. Taboo is one of the best games ever. I love playing that game. I had an excellent friend and whenever we were teamed up, no one else stood a chance because we so freakishly linked, we could give each other the most outrageous clues and know instantly what the other was talking about.

I also used to play it with my students back when I was teaching. That was always a riot.

And I must read any interview where Elizabeth Bennett and Liz Lemon are compared.

  3. I love Taboo. A few other favorites are Scatagories and Outburst. That's all I can think of right now. Oh, Catch Phrase is fun too, similar to Taboo. Now I think they have en electronic version, but the one my brother/sis in law had years ago wasn't. And you don't want to be caught holding the disk when the time's up, so that disk goes flying sometimes. At heads. :)

  4. Taboo is one of our favorites to play too. My personal fav is Encore though, because it is the one game I always win. Hahaha. I know so many lyrics, I can usually pull them out of no where for the W.

  5. Good morning!! I loved your game with your horses! Having come from a family of horse people, I am wondering if my sister ever engaged in that game at the stables with her girlfriends!! Adorable. I loved the story very much. Joined your blog today also! Sandy

  6. We don't play many games unless we have friends over, for some reason. For group games, yes Taboo is fun as is Mad Gab. I also still love a rousing nerdy game of Scrabble (can Scrabble be rousing?).

  7. I enjoy Taboo, but I am horrible at it. I guess I'm not good with a game that tells me I can't do something. I always slip up and used the restricted words.

  8. Bobby for Apples with horses sounds hilarious!
I know that my pony when I was a kid would have ruled, she was too smart for her own good.

  9. I want to come to your horse parties!! I grew up riding horses, but haven't in so long. Never thought of having them bob for apples :)

  10. Sounds like your house is the fun house! We don't play many games in our house, but when we do, we do like to play Scrabble and Bananagrams.

  12. Funny story (read: not funny): My youngest son is obsessed with the squeaker from Taboo. Whenever he squeaks it he always puts his hand over his face like it is on the box.

    Man, I love Taboo!

  14. Taboo is a great game - we play that in the office every Christmas :)

Is it just me, or do bobbed apples taste better than regular apples?

Thanks for taking part in the blogfest, Rachael!

  17. Stopping in from the Level Up blogfest. Never heard of taboo but clearly sounds like a good time.

  18. Ah, Taboo. I used to love that one too. But most of my family got sick of the person holding the buzzer abusing it and we started playing the game without it--it just wasn't as fun then :P Thanks for participating in the blogfest!

  21. I've always wanted to play Taboo, but never have. It sounds so fun, but not nearly as fun as watching horses bob for apples and dive for carrots. Whoa!

  22. As a kid I loved Snakes and Ladders. Heard good things about Taboo.

  23. Ah! Love how smart Beatle was. And that is a lovely name for a horse. Sure tops my daughter's pony (Rabbit).

  24. I loved Charades and Scrabble. Monopoly bored me. I am still a huge game player. I play mah jong and canasta on Pogo, reaise dragons on Dragonvale and play Hana Fuda and Poker whenever I get a chance.
