The ever awesome Alex J. Cavanaugh is hosting another super fun blogfest. This time it's all about genre favorites.
Movies: For me I'd have to say Romantic Comedies. I love Dirty Dancing, Pretty Woman, and my all time favorite movie ever, The Princess Bride. I absolutely hate when movies are advertised like comedies and then turn out to be dramas! I don't like sad.
Music: I love all kinds of music, but the thing I listen to the most of is country. I know, so not cool, but I love story songs and songs about family. Where else, other than a country song, would you get lines like, "I'm going to love you. . .as long as old men sit and talk about the weather, as long as old women sit and talk about old men." Now that's forever. ;)
Books: When I was younger my favorite was fantasy. As an adult, I don't know if I have a favorite. I am learning that I love magic realism, though. I loved The Night Circus, and I adore Sarah Addison Allen.
Guilty Pleasure: Picture books. I know I'm not the target audience, (well, I kind of am now that I have kids.) But I have been collecting picture books since way before I had kids. I have zillions. Some favorites: The Girl in the Castle Inside the Museum, The Duchess of Whimsy, and Press Here.
Although a wise woman once said that she didn't have a guilty pleasure because she doesn't feel guilty about what she likes. And I like that. And I don't really feel guilty for loving picture books. It's more like an odd favorite. :)
What do you think? What are some of your favorites?
Hi just come over from rhythm and rhyme:
ReplyDeleteLoved your favourites, I only knew about the blogfest today so only wrote one Genre.
I especially enjoyed the film Pretty Women, thanks for a most enjoyable read.
Yvonne.
I could totally hang out with you! You just listed some of my favourite films EVER! :D
ReplyDeletePicture books - funny! And romantic comedies are my guilty pleasure.
ReplyDeleteThanks for participating in my blogfest!
"she didn't have a guilty pleasure because she doesn't feel guilty about what she likes." << oh, I like that saying ... nice!!
ReplyDeleteIt was another blogger who said it. I think it was Angeline Trevena, but I'm not 100% sure! I do remember loving it. :)
DeletePicture books is a great guilty pleasure!
ReplyDeleteI love picture books too! I'm sad my kids have grown out of them.
ReplyDeletePicture books are always fun!
ReplyDeleteBtw, you won my giveaway of The Reapers are the Angels. Drop me an email with address so I can send that book to ya!

Wow! Thanks Danielle, I'll be in touch. :)
DeleteI love romantic comedies! That would be my guilty pleasure! But I like that saying--why should I feel guilty about liking them?
ReplyDeleteI hate unhappy endings too! And romantic comedies rock! I just watched "Friends with Benefits" and I just loved it. Woody Harrelson's character cracked me up the most.
ReplyDeleteEveryone loves romantic comedies!
ReplyDeleteI love picture books! I have a huge collection. I enjoyed reading your list!
ReplyDeleteRom Coms are a great choice ;)
ReplyDeleteI hate when black comedies are advertised as straight or romantic comedies. Nice to meet you.
ReplyDeleteYes! When they show the only four funny lines of the movie in the preview, and really it's about something horrible like child abuse.
Deletesometimes all you need to cheer up is a good romantic comedy.
ReplyDeleteMusic seems to be the hardest genre for people to pin down.
ReplyDeleteMy guilty pleasure includes a series of books where the first one is called... Guilty Pleasures... spooky!!
What's not to like about picture books? Contemporary art plus a good story.
ReplyDeleteArt that you get to carry around with you, that your kids can sleep with. Nothing beats that. :)
DeleteRomantic Comedies are fun. And I see you're another Princess Bride fan! ^_^
ReplyDeleteI am so with you on the guilty pleasure quote. Diversity of tastes doesn't mean one has to feel guilty, right? Country? I like the rocking country sound and even some of the 60's country (Hank Williams, Gene Snow, etc.).
ReplyDeleteGotta' like Hank Williams. ;)
DeleteI just rewatched Dirty Dancing with my daughter. Forgot how good that movie is!
ReplyDeleteIt is so good! I love Patrick Swayze. :)
DeleteFun answers! Who doesn't love the Princess Bride?
ReplyDeletelove it! no crying, but country music, ha!
ReplyDeletei only like country song by seether
but i adored night circus! so glad i read it! a total piece of art!
Ooh, I like that quote. Really, why should we feel guilty about something we like?
ReplyDeleteI like country music as well, though I'm from a whole other culture. Kenny Rogers and Ray Stevens are among my favourites.
ReplyDeletePicture books are fun. I look forward to having kids so I have an excuse to collect them :)
ReplyDeleteAllison (Geek Banter)
I went througha phase in college where I listened to country. I still like some of those big hits from that time, but I just don't enjoy it anymore.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, I love songs about family, too. And when I'm reading t the kids, I think I get caught up in the pictures more than my kids:)
ReplyDeleteIt has been a long time since I have read a picture book. A couple of months ago, I added some onto Goodreads--then I realized how many titles I've forgotten over the years.
ReplyDeleteI LOVED Night Circus! I LOVE Princess Bride! Were we separated at birth?
ReplyDeleteRachel, it appears, given your taste in movies, music and books, that we are twins separated at birth :)
ReplyDeleteI think I must be a non genre person! My writing doesn't often fit neatly into just one genre, but I hadn't realised none of my tastes do either. I don't have a favourite genre of film, book or music. Often I've thought I don't like a particular genre, then I've come across something which proves me wrong.
ReplyDeleteI love picture books and books for younger readers too! I love how you put that part about not feeling guilty about it - that's why I couldn't really name a guilty pleasure. I like books for any age group.
ReplyDeleteI love that you love picture books (me too) and that they aren't a guilty pleasure- but an odd favorite. All the movies that you listed are ones I have watched over and over. I must have watched The Princess Bride over 100 times! So glad I hopped over!
ReplyDelete~Jess
The Husband is a huge country fan, I tried, but just can't get into it. But he swears by it. Will listen to nothing else. To each his own, right? :)
ReplyDeleteI LOVED the Night Circus. It was so different and captivating, all the way through, I never knew what was going to happen next. So cool.
And The Princess Bride? Lurve it. We quote that movie all the time. Two of my fav's "You've been mostly dead all day" and "Never go against a Sicilian when death is on the line..." LOL
I love picture books too. Although, I must admit that I enjoy cutting them up and using the pictures to make things. :)
ReplyDeleteI think I'm the only person in the world who didn't love the Night Circus. It was a little slow for me. The descriptions were amazing, but I never felt like I got to know either of the MC's enough to really buy into this once-in-a-lifetime epic romance. But, that's why there are so many books, right? Because we all have different taste.
Why didn't I think of The Princess Bride as a favorite movie. Duh!!!
ReplyDeleteThese are fantastic!
ReplyDeleteAnd for my favorite picture book, I like the Boy who Saved the Stars. It's some pretty fantastic art.
Hey - I tagged you today on my blog post!
ReplyDeleteYes! I am so with you on loving romantic comedies! And like you I've come to a movie expecting something light and fun only to find something dark and depressing. Ugh. Give me The Princess Bride any day!
